Marine Pest ID Webinar

Marine pests can turn up on boat hulls, marine equipment and structures, or in natural coastal environments. Knowing what to look for and how to report a suspected sighting helps us detect them early.

Join this free webinar for practical guidance on identifying marine pests and responding when you find something unusual.

The session will be hosted by Abraham Growcott, Principal Adviser Aquatic Surveillance for Ministry for Primary Industries (pictured).

We’ll cover:

  • How to recognise marine pests of concern, including Asian paddle crab, Australian droplet tunicate, clubbed tunicate, exotic caulerpa, Mediterranean fanworm and Asian kelp (Undaria)

  • Marine pests that are not yet known to be in New Zealand

  • How pests spread on hulls and equipment, and why they matter

  • How marine pest surveillance works

  • When and how to report a suspected pest, including when to collect a specimen

There will be time to ask questions about marine biosecurity and the work of the Top of the North, Fiordland, Bottom of the South, and Top of the South Marine Biosecurity Partnerships.

The webinar is for boaties, marina and port staff, marine farmers, coastal groups and anyone interested in protecting our marine environment.

Bookings will open soon
