Schools get onboard with marine biosecurity message

A couple of weeks ago, a Marine Pests Teachers’ Workshop was held in Whangārei, with educators and professionals from across the region gathering to delve into the world of marine biosecurity.

Councillor Amy Macdonald opened the day, which was hosted by Northland Regional Council’s Enviroschools team. The workshop provided a unique opportunity for teachers to enhance their understanding of marine pests and their impact on our precious marine environment, so that they can pass this knowledge onto future generations.

During the workshop they had the opportunity to learn from the NRC biosecurity team, have fun with interactive games and explore ways to develop real-life science capabilities with their tamariki and rangatahi when back at their schools and early childhood centres.

Events like these play a crucial role in shaping the next generation of environmentally conscious citizens.

They were also lucky enough to watch a large pod of dolphins playing in the harbour!
